PyPy 1.1: presente e prospettive future

NB: when this abstract was submitted, PyPy 1.1 has not yet been relased, but
it will surely be by the actual conference.

PyPy 1.1: present and future prospects
---------------------------------------
Just a little more than two years after version 1.0, PyPy 1.1 has
lately been released: this talk will give an overview on the news
of this latest version and the future prospects of the project,
both from research and end-user standpoint.

For years, PyPy has been regarded as a "cool" project but not
really mature, without any immediate practical usage. Actually,
there are several usecases that can take benefit of PyPy nowadays.

The talk will focus on:

  • Main news of version 1.1: compatibility with CPython 2.5, ctypes, full support for real-world applications.
  • Sandboxing: executing untrusted code without security risks
  • To JIT or not to JIT: status update on JIT research; why the previous prototypes did not work as expected; why the new developments are so promising.
  • Faster than C# (on .NET): nonsense... or not?
