Python's role in the detection of gravitational waves

The recent detection of gravitational waves from the merger of two black holes is a fundamental milestone in physics and astronomy. This discovery required not only major advances in experimental techniques, but also the design of suitable data analysis algorithms, their efficient implementation and their parallelization over large computing clusters. This talk will give an overview of the physics of gravitational waves and describe how Python, together with a collection of Python modules, took part in this historical discovery.
